A Fast, Simple Test For Your “Mental Toughness” & Discipline

I used to think that my success, strength, and even my survivability came down to the knowledge I gather (training), God, and the “tools” (gear) I carry.

I’ve changed my mind…

As I look back at my accomplishments (and failures), it’s ultimately come down to the amount of “mental toughness” and focused discipline I’ve applied to my goals and life’s “situations”.

And it’s been as true in combat… as it was in business… as well as being a husband and a father.

Honestly, it’s something I still struggle with today as I chase after a thousand “shiny objects”, accomplishing a little of everything, but not 100% of anything (it seems).

I’ve been talking with a buddy of mine about this, Mike Gillette, and he gave me this fast, simple test to measure my current “toughness levels” and progress as I work on things.

It’s super interesting so I thought I’d share it with you here…

A Fast, Simple Test For Your Mental Toughness & Self-Discipline

All you need is a candle, a hand-held stopwatch (I use my smartphone), and a dark room.

Here’s how to perform the exercise…

  1. Sit comfortably in a chair approximately 6 feet from the lit candle.
  2. Hold the stop watch in your hand and close your eyes.
  3. Open your eyes and immediately start the stopwatch as you stare directly at the candle’s flame.
  4. Your goal is to stare at the candle flame as long as you possibly can… without blinking!
  5. As soon as you blink, stop the stopwatch and record your time.

 

As you practice this exercise over time, you’ll notice that your times steadily increase.

In other words, your brain is literally developing better focus and being more disciplined – pushing past your previous limits.

I know it sounds crazy, but I’ve been doing it and I’m more “on my game” with working out (goodbye Christmas cookie gut!), meditation is easier, and I’m getting more accomplished at work.
