So it seems to me as if maybe one should just pick a rifle and a caliber and use it. They make “sniper” rifle in various calibers for police snipers and sharpshooters, notably 5.56. In regards to calibers, I figure .50 caliber is the extreme and maybe too much power for most people. And in WW2 most rifles were in .30 caliber and they used 30-06, .303 and the K98’s 8mm in the sniper role. And this trend continued into Vietnam. I would imagine in an apocalypse where the SHTF that many would turn to long distance shooting to better utilize their high power rifles since most people desire high capacity, semiautomatic firearms with maybe an effective range of 300 years or less.
